Ocean Cultures: Relating to our oceans across nations, languages and backgrounds

Thursday 28th April 2022

Cape Town, South Africa |Keynote broadcast

Our understanding of the oceans and how we relate to them is framed by our context, including aspects related to nationhood, language and background. Exploring and considering how such aspects of culture interact and influence our ocean relationships is key to developing and promoting holistic ocean knowledge.  In this sense, we promote a more nuanced co-creation approach, taking into account various ocean knowledges, motivations and contexts to promote ocean stewardship.

Here, we will consider the role different approaches and methodologies play in developing holistic ocean knowledges through three diverse keynote speakers who will, drawing on work carried out in southern Africa, focus on marine sciences education, cultural heritage and integrated approaches in pursuit of sustainability. The keynotes will be followed by parallel workshops where, drawing on insights from the keynote speakers, we will work towards developing a shared understanding of ocean knowledges. We will then explore how we can harness existing tools and approaches to foster our vision of shared ocean knowledges and identify possible future actions.

Overarching question:

How do education, cultural and arts-based methods and integrated methods help us with promoting ocean knowledge to various actors across the Atlantic?
